Keep Your Family Safe and Go Green at Home

by Betsy Larson

Most people, like I did, grew up thinking the smell of bleach meant clean.  Every cleaning product was stored underneath the kitchen sink, safely locked away from reach.  Although this method kept the toxic cleaners out of little hands, the damage was still being done.  Fumes emitted when using chemical based cleaning products can cause serious respiratory problems and can even increase the risk of childhood asthma.  Did you know that on average a U.S household will generate more than 20 pounds of hazardous waste each year? The EPA considers products such as toilet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, oven cleaners, and bleach as hazardous waste.   As a result, by purchasing the common chemical-based household cleaning products the consumer is doing a large disservice to the environment.  The common consumer perpetuates the chemical cycle of manufacturing, distribution, usage and disposal on a daily basis.   Breaking the chemical cycle is simple and all it takes is a few simple steps to get on the right path.  The first and most important step is ridding yourself of the harmful cleaning agents.  Proper disposal of the cleaners is available at local hazardous waste center in most towns and cities. Once this is done, you will want to purchase non toxic cleaning products for the home.  Here is a list of qualities you should look for when buying the new, chemical free products:

  • Nontoxic
  • Hypoallergenic
  • A formula void of hazardous chemicals
  • Biodegradable surfactents
  • Phosphate, borate and nitrate-free
  • Ingredients from natural sources

There are a handful of nontoxic cleaning products available in most stores but you want to make sure that they have the green qualities you are looking for and are superior in their cleaning abilities.  Looks can be deceiving and the cleaning quality of the products is sometimes very poor.  When in doubt, research what you are buying.

Our household has been chemical-free for four years now and it has made a world of difference.  I am keeping my family safe and contributing to the preservation of the earth.  I was so moved by what my home products stand for and the powerful cleaning ability that I became a company distributor.  I have my own business that distributes superior, natural products and loving what I do.  Anyone can make the transition to a healthier home.  I encourage you to take what you have learned and share it with others and pass on the gift of healthy living.
