Cold Coffee Stage of Life!
by Jaime Allison, CEO & Founder of Moms in Motion Inc.
I’ve had a revelation! After reheating my coffee for the 3rd time this morning, I have decided that I am in the Cold Coffee Stage of life. There was a time, when sleeping in was followed by an Everything Bagel, eggs, salsa and a piping hot cup of coffee, ahhh! A time when you could read the paper and dress yourself at a peaceful pace, allowing you to catch the poppy seed wedged between the two front teeth, but no more. Nope, the slow mornings are gone, but the coffee, my one last ritualistic hope, has become just that, a hope that I find myself striving for each and every day.
As I pinball around my house in the morning… feeding, dressing, braiding, brushing, tying, cleaning, reminding, hugging and kissing POOF, my sad little cup of java’s steam arms wave bye-bye, and dissipate sadly into cold rejection. Determined, I reheat. Round two. This time, I transfer my cup in a traveling mug as I hustle the kids out the door, and into the car. Strap, strap they’re safely in and off we go. Goodbye smooches, quick hellos to parents and off to work. As I settle in at the computer, I reach for my mug and ahhh yes, there it is, my cold coffee welcome!
It was during this 3rd round of reheating, when I experienced my profound aha! moment ~ The Cold Coffee Stage of Life! Yes, a stage I do believe we are all in together. Even though I look forward to the day when I can lounge around with a piping hot cup of java in tote, I’ve decided to embrace this stage whole heartedly. You see, I have learned a great deal from this stage; it has taught me a deeper understanding and sense of compassion for others. For example, today during drop off, I could appreciate the mother who was wearing her shirt inside out. The inside out design was unique and engaging. And I ask, what’s wrong with a tag flapping a warm farewell to all as she walked her son to school? I also could appreciate and relate to the woman ahead of me who shut her car door on her skirt and drove off with it popping along the pavement. I understood and did not judge (even if I noticed) the pink sweats that my dear friend has worn each day this week. Yes, we are all together in this. You might call it something else if you’re not a coffee drinker, but it is there. We’re all just doing our best to connect the dots and in the process may have to self sacrifice a bit.
But as I look at the steamless cup of java to my side, I say thank you for symbolizing this frenetic, selfless, yet precious beyond words time. I wouldn’t trade my poppy seed smile or my Cold Coffee for anything hotter, ever! So, bottoms up to you all. Go Moms Go!
