Belmont Park Offers Family Fun
Historic Belmont Beachfront Park is home to the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, one well-known family attraction in San Diego. When the Giant Dipper opened to riders on July 4, 1925, it was the main attraction for the then brand new Mission Beach Amusement Center. In the 1930s, it was renamed Belmont Park. After decades of change and neglect, the Coaster was restored and reopened August 11, 1990. Once a boardwalk with a handful of attractions, Belmont Park is San Diego's premiere beachfront entertainment destination, with many rides, restaurants and shops for your family's enjoyment.
Among the classic boardwalk rides offered are an arcade, bumper cars, a tilt-a-whirl and 3-story vertical plunge. The Liberty Carousel, an antique reproduction, has hand-painted depictions, based on San Diego Historical Society photographs, of Father Junipero Serra discovering the San Diego Mission, Lindbergh's flying over the Giant Dipper, as well as of the Hotel Del Coronado. Unique attractions include the FlowRider, the Pirates of Belmont, a black light miniature golf course and the Plunge, San Diego's largest indoor heated swimming pool.
How to Save Money at Belmont Park
Here are a few ways to maximize your recreation budget:
- Consider how many rides you will likely go on to see what is the most economical option. Ride tickets are sold individually, and each ride has its own number of tickets required to ride. Two other options, however, are a bonus pack (saving the cost of one ride) or the much more sensible Wristband. FlowRider, Coconut Climb, and Pirates Mini-Golf entrance fees are sold separately.
- Become a member of the Wavehouse and receive a 50% discount on FlowRider.
- Go on Tuesdays after 4 pm, Family Nights, when all rides half-priced, discounts on food, shopping and other attractions.
- Print out an on-line coupon for a major savings on the unlimited ride wristbands on Thursdays during the summer.
- Ask about birthday party packages for miniature golf, water fun or at the amusement park. Most provide unlimited rides, tokens and food for not much more than the cost of the attractions.
