Q: "I want to take my visiting nephews to have a dinner. I don’t want to take them to a kid restaurant, like Chuck E. Cheese’s. Is there a place with good food and casual place enough for them to be kids? Any BBQ? Help!"
~ Michaela Southwick, La Mesa
A: If you don’t mind getting the kids really messy, take ‘em to Phil’s BBQ (located on Midway Drive just north of the Sports Arena) in Point Loma. Pig statues greet the customers as they queue up to partake in the big rib feast. What nephew wouldn’t like biting into a whole mess of ribs and not care about how much sauce he gets on his face? Phil’s may not sound like your typical place to take kids, but family fare is the norm here. It is a place that encourages sharing because there is no way one person can conquer 5 giant beef rib bones all by themselves! Burgers, onion rings, and fries are also on the menu so if the nephews are not into ribs, they can still fill up while you nibble away.
