Q: "Recently, someone mentioned NTC-Liberty Station and I had no idea what they were talking about. Is this something I could take the family to?"
~ Melissa, El Cajon
A: That’s a great question! Back in 1920’s, NTC (Naval Training Center-San Diego,) was the Navy’s recruiting station. In the late 1990’s, after a lengthy federal process, the Navy gave up the property and Corky McMillan won the rights to develop the land. The ”base re-use“ concept converts old government property into a new and vibrant use for the greater community. There has been controversy about the project as folks have a beef with a private developer profiting from valuable taxpayer land, but that debate will outlive all of us.
Today, the land is called ”Liberty Station“. The name was meant to honor the past while creating a flashy new vibe. We, affectionately, call it ”an instant community“ with pricey condos, restaurants, parks, grocery stores, the Rock Church, High-Tech High School, and hotels. You’ll find Panera, Trader Joe’s, Von’s, Oggi’s, Wine Steals, Coldstone, Sammy’s, Solare, Starbuck’s, etc. Nickelodeon/Marriott have plans to build a 650 room hotel and a 100,000 square-foot water park by 2010. When finished, the NTC Park will be the largest of waterfront park in San Diego. Check it out!
Take Harbor Drive (west), past San Diego airport, and make a right just after crossing over the bridge of the canal. Map
