Q: "I am a military wife of three (ages 5, 9 and 15) wonderful kids. We recently moved here from out of state and currently my husband is deployed. We don’t have the extra money to send my kids to camp or anything that will require regular tuition, but what I do have is time. I would love some advice as to what I can do with the kids that is affordable and fun, as we are on a tight budget."

A: Welcome to San Diego! You will have your work set out for you, no doubt, but if time is on your side, you can turn this Summer into an adventure. A good way to go about it is to schedule time for academics, leisure, and some sort of physical fitness. If you make a routine out of your days, you can create some fun, yet enriching adventures. A good idea is to let your kids know your parameters, do some research in the community, then brainstorm with them as to what they are interested in.
Here are some ideas to look into:
- Join your local YMCA. You can pay a very reasonable monthly fee and have the opportunity for all of you to benefit from the facilities. They give out a specific number of scholarships, so you might want to look into that. They offer all types of classes for all ages, so investigate!
- Look into the Boys and Girls Club. Once again, your kids can benefit from fantastic age-appropriate activities, and at the same time you will not break the bank.
- Enjoy the outdoors at your local public pool, where you might consider purchasing family membership passes.
- Take advantage of free Summer concerts at nearby parks. Take a picnic, chairs and relax!
- Enroll your kids in a reading incentive program at your local library, and take them there once a week!
- Take your kids to movie theaters that offer super affordable Summer series tickets for kids’ shows.
- Since you are new to San Diego go on one fieldtrip a week, and have the kids take pictures and create a project around their adventures!
- Consider going with a group to cut some of the gas expenses!
