Q: "My husband and I want to keep it real this year and do this ‘staycation’ thing. We just want to stay in San Diego and do what tourists do. Where can we go near the beach for good fish tacos?"
~ Courtney Roth, San Carlos
A: Ah, a woman after our own hearts! Put on your flip flops, shorts, hat and head down to Pacific Beach to World Famous (711 Pacific Beach Dr.) on Wednesday nights. Why? Fish tacos on the cheap! Get down to PB early, park the car, and grab a seat for the $1.50 lobster tacos to go along with their cold cocktails and beers. The cherry on this sundae is that World Famous Restaurant is on the boardwalk. Can't get any closer to the beach and people watching never gets better.
You can also cruise down to Ocean Beach to the South Beach Bar and Grill (5059 Newport Ave.) This place is at the end of Newport near the OB Pier. They offer grilled and fried fish tacos. What’s neat about this place is you can get wahoo tacos, mahi mahi tacos or even good ol' shrimp tacos. These tacos were mentioned in Bon Appetite! At this place, their best deal is starts at 11 am when you can take advantage of the beer clock prices. Beer clock prices start at $1 and goes up .25 every hour! Now, that’s a ‘staycation’!
