Q: "What is your experience with good/not-so-good buys at dollar stores?"

~ Tracy, Chula Vista

A: What a great question.  While spending less is usually very appealing, it can also make consumers more prone to buying merchandise of less quality or value.  I will share with you certain items that I have found be not worthwhile and why, and then the merchandise that I have consistently found as good buys (from a mom’s perspective):

Not-so-Favorite Dollar Store Items

Kids’ Toys/Jewelry (some) - possibly lead-based and fall apart easily

Vitamins - little oversight from FDA

Batteries - poor performance

Clothing – minus socks and hats the quality is just not top

Electrical products – not top-notch and potentially hazardous

Toothpaste- some imported toothpaste had been proven to be poisonous

Frozen Desserts/Ice Cream - often not fresh

Favorite Dollar Store Items

Gift Wrap - save on colored tissue paper, gift bags, ribbons and more

School Supplies/Crafts - especially grammar school desk/craft items and teacher’s supplies

Books - while outdated, if they were good reads, they still are!

Shampoo and Hair Products – never a problem

Treats/Candy - great selection of snacks, gum and candy

Party Supplies - variety of decorations, party favors/baggies, baby/bridal shower favors

Containers/Storage – small plastic baskets, gift baskets, plastic sandwich/snack baggies
