September 2008

Stacey Ross, site owner of San Diego Bargain Mama.com

Q:  "Do you have any specific tips as to how we can save money shopping for back-to-school supplies and clothes?  I am not a huge shopper, but during this time of the year and on holidays, we usually spend way more than we can afford.  Any hot tips for us?  Help!"

~ Mary Beth, Ramona

A:  According to the National Retail Federation’s 2008 Report, families will spend on average nearly $600 on back-to-school items.  This does not have to be the case, Mary Beth.  Studies show that so much of what we throw in the basket are impulse items.  My number one suggestion is to have your family create a ”needs“ and a ”wants“ list.  The ”needs“ list can include items that can ideally be purchased when the sales are ”loss leaders“, or items that get you in the door, do not send profits to the store.  Stock up on these items (pencils, paper, glue, etc.); they range from 10 cents to a dollar and are a fraction of their regular retail price!  Also, check in the circulars and on SDBM’s Bargain Alert page to see if you can find savings at your favorite stores and some extra coupon savings for the road!  The ”wants“ list can consist of just a few items such as a pair of pants, tennis shoes, and a backpack.  Trust me, kids usually change their minds a couple weeks into school, anyway, and that will work for you, too, as come mid to the end of September you will find your back-to-school merchandise at reduced prices!
